The ATK-built prototype sounding rocket, designed to evaluate low-cost launch system technologies, had to be destroyed shortly after lift-off as it veered off course. It was carrying two NASA hypersonic experiments that were to be deployed on a suborbital flight.
The solid-fuelled rocket was destroyed by remote control 27 seconds into the flight at an altitude of 12,000 feet (3.6 km). Officials said they do not know why it veered off course.
ATK did not put a value on the rocket, which had been funded internally. "This was an experimental flight to gain information," said Trina Patterson of ATK. "It was never developed to be an operational vehicle."
